New Year, New Business

Happy New Year! It’s a clean slate. Outside my window, the snow covered fields make me feel like I’m looking at a fresh page, not a bad metaphor for a writer with many stories still to tell.

I thought I’d take this opportunity to let you know my writing/publishing plans for the coming year. Here is a rundown of what I’m looking at in 2023.

1. New Valkyrie Bestiary Books: From its conception, I planned 9 main books in the Valkyrie Bestiary Series. That hasn’t changed. I’m already at work on Book 7. My goal is to get Books 7 & 8 out in 2023, plus one or two shorter works. I don’t have release dates for these yet. I don’t like to announce dates until I have a solid rough draft under my belt, because…life happens. Last year, I published 2 full-length novels and 1 novella. This is a good pace for me, and one that I think I can maintain.

2. Large Print Editions: Dragons Don’t Eat Meat now available in a Large Print Edition. The rest of the Valkyrie Bestiary Series will follow suit, about a book every month. This is a project that is close to my heart because my mother suffers from macular degeneration and is slowly going blind. Since this is an inherited disease (and I seem to to be Mum’s mini-me), it’s possible that I will face blindness in the future too. All my large print editions will conform to the print guidelines suggested by the American Council for the Blind.

3. Coloring Books, Journals and Agendas: I’ve wanted to create a coloring book of Valkyrie beasts for a while. I hope to get this project started soon. The coloring book would include the cover art for all the books, plus various creatures encountered by Kyra. If this works out well, I might continue with some cute critters journals and agendas.

4. Ollie Plushie Kickstarter: Many, many readers ask for an Ollie plush toy. I would love one too. However, I looked into the costs associated with creating, buying, storing and shipping plushies. It’s not something I could afford cost-wise or time-wise right now. So, my idea is to do this with a Kickstarter event. That way, I can gauge interest and the project wouldn’t go forward unless it was fully funded. I need to iron out some details of warehousing and shipping, but I think this is doable in the near future. The kickstarter would probably include a special edition hardcover and the plushie.

5. A New Series: I don’t think I’ll ever be ready to say goodbye to Kyra and her critters, but I have many ideas for new characters and stories. I would like to start a new series this year too. I’ll be putting out more details on this as I start the series. But for now, I envision a story set in Kyra’s world, but much farther in the future, perhaps about 200 years after the Flood Wars. There will be a whole new cast of characters to enjoy and hopefully some page-turning excitement.

Those are my big projects for the coming year. I’d love to hear what you think about any of these ideas. Feel free to reply right in the comments. And thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Readers like you are the reason I keep writing!
